The 5-Week Surf Program takes a small group of likeminded women – at the same stage in the learning cycle – through a structured program where you’ll learn exactly what you need to know – at the right time, and in the right order – to empower you with skills to progress as quickly as possible. Through our detailed progression roadmap our first class surf instructors will breakdown all of the technical, complicated surf jargon and deliver it to you in a step by step format that’s super easy to follow, all in a 100% non-judgemental learning environment.

Highlights

The 5-week program leads students through a structured progression pathway, teaching the right skills at the right time, step by step, for the quickest improvements possible.

Each session is split into three distinct parts:

Theory. This is where we go into detail learning new skills, ready for application in the water. We follow a roadmap with pre-defined outcomes to get you surfing better as fast as possible.

In-water tuition. You’ll have assistance in-water should you need it at all times. Our trained instructors will be on hand to provide real-time feedback, offer advice, and showcase demonstrations.

Post surf analysis. After each session we recap on areas of improvement, ready for implementation the following week.

Skill level

This program is for both absolute beginners (people that have never surfed before), and for progressor level women (people that have been surfing a little while, and want to make the big improvements quickly).

What you’ll learn

We split the group into two levels: Level 1 [Beginners] & Level 2 [Progressors].

Each group will follow along to a unique curriculum designed to fast track progression and build confidence in the surf.

Level 1 [beginners]

We start with the absolute basics, teaching you the right skills and technique from the offset to set you up for a lifelong love affair with surfing.

From a solid technical foundation, you’ll have a springboard from which to blaze through the beginner stages in record time.

You’ll learn:

  • How to select and catch waves unassisted in the white water
  • How to stall and accelerate the board
  • Master the ‘Aussie Pop Up’ method
  • Work on agility and prediction drills
  • Board management and control
  • Ocean awareness
  • The proper stance which will allow you to perform turns and progress onto catching unbroken waves
  • Turning left and right in the white water
  • Understand etiquette and know how to confidently and safely deal with any situation which may present itself to you

Level 2 [progressors]

The Progressor program is about making the leap from surfing whitewater waves, to surfing out the back, taking off on green unbroken waves, in control, with ease.

You’ll learn:

  • Harness the power of the ‘Pop & Cork’ method – a technique that’ll double (or even triple your wave count, instantly).
  • Understand the 4-stages of a wave so that you’re on the right waves, at the right time – every time.
  • Learn the secrets to the little known ‘Pro-Pop’ method – used by the pros, but so often overlooked by beginners.
  • Master the skills of taking-off on green unbroken waves – without nosediving on every wave!
  • Learn the difference between functional and progressive stance – which one you should be focusing on, and why.
  • Find out the oh so common (easily avoidable) mistakes that 90% of beginners make time, and time again – and how to correct them.
  • Learn all about ‘Spot-X’ – what it is, why it’s important, and how to use it to your advantage.

A typical session

  • Meet & greet, get wetsuits and surfboards ready for session start.
  • Beach Theory: We get together as a group and go through a thorough theory session on the beach. We cover the techniques on land before hitting the water to implement what we’ve learned.
  • In-Water Session: The group enter the water alongside our experienced instructors for a group coaching session. Your coach will be on-hand to offer feedback, advice, and provide demonstrations.
  • Wrap Up: The group comes together at the end of the session for a breakdown and analysis, with group feedback and things to work on before the next week.

We generally stick very close to this structure, however on occasion we may alter things to best serve the group.

Equipment

If you’ve got your own gear, by all means bring that along, or if you’d rather use ours we have a tonne of wetsuits and surfboards you can use free of charge for the duration of the weekend.

The minimum age to participate in this course is 15+.

Joined the 4 week women’s programme and had an amazing experience with Rowan and yente!Great curriculum, learned tons, and really improved my surfing quickly. I’ve surfed on and off for years and have been stuck at beginner/intermediate stage.. really wish I had access to something like this earlier! I had such a great time I decided to rejoin and do another 5 week programme – highly recommend!

I joined Mount Surf School’s women’s programme as a beginner learned and I thoroughly enjoyed the lessons. My instructor, Yente, was friendly and open to all my questions. She helped me get better by correcting my posture and giving feedback whenever possible. 100% recommended!

FAQs

How do I know if I’m the right level for this program?

This program is for Level 1 & Level 2 surfers. A level 1 surfer is someone who has either never surfed before, or only surfed a handful of times that wants to learn the basics first.

A level 2 surfer is someone that has the basic skills developed already. You should be:

  • Catching whitewater waves unassisted.
  • Beginning to catch small unbroken waves.
  • Be able to pop to your feet and ride waves to the beach consistently.

Still not sure if you’re the right level for this course? If so, go check out our ‘What Level am I’ page.

What happens if the waves are bad?

We’d love to say we can guarantee perfect waves every time, however the truth is, that’s not possible.

We’re at the whim of mother nature, and we’ll embrace it in all its forms.

Furthermore, the way the content is structured, the quality of the waves effects us little in the learning process.

We make the most of whatever conditions we have on offer.

What happens in bad weather?

Come wind, rain, hail or shine, we’re ready to go.

Surfing is a sport that embraces all the elements, and we do too.

What happens if it’s flat?

We’re lucky in the Mount in that there’s always a wave for us to practice on, even if it’s really small.

We’ve got some great equipment in-house, big buoyant boards, to catch even the tiniest of waves – giving us plenty of opportunity to practice what we learn.

What if conditions are too dangerous to surf?

If the beaches are closed and conditions are too dangerous for us to hold the session, we’ll be forced to postpone.

We’ll make this call no later than 24 hours prior to the session start date.

The session will be made up the next week.

How many people are there in the group?

The exact numbers of the group will vary, however we have coaching ratio of 1 coach to 8 students in line with Surfing New Zealand guidelines.

What if I can’t make a session?

If you can’t make a session please let us know with at least 24 hours notice.

If proper notice has been given you’ll be granted the option of a make up session in one of the other groups.

What’s the cancellation policy?

21 Days notice is required to cancel your booking.

Upon cancellation you have the option to either receive a refund minus 30% administration/setup costs, or you can opt for a 100% credit note to be used towards the same booked service at the next available dates offered with the Mount Surf School.

Less than 14 days notice no refund and full credit issued less 40% administration costs.

Less than 7 days notice, no refund or credit is available.
