OCEAN SAFETY

OCEAN EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM

TEACHING KIDS & TEENS HOW TO STAY CALM, AND HOW TO STAY SAFE IN THE OCEAN.

OCEAN EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM

OVERVIEW:

OCEAN EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM

OCEAN SAFETY

DURATION: 2 HOURS

AGES: ALL AGES

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The ocean is our natural playground here in New Zealand, a place for children and adults alike to cool off, play, ride the waves and have fun.

But that fun can get twisted on its head in seconds as conditions fluctuate.

Flash rips, rogue waves, stormy seas, underwater rocks - all of which can turn an otherwise playful environment into something treacherous in the blink of an eye.

On their own, to an experienced water-person, these are just the natural ebbs and flows, different faces of an ever changing environment; something to be aware of and plan for accordingly, but not something intrinsically dangerous.

The big difference comes in knowledge, understanding, and most importantly how we react.

Fear, panic, and stress are the real dangers in the ocean, the silent killers, however with a little training and knowledge these things can be overcome and minimised, helping to keep our kids safe in the ocean this summer.

And that's what this program is all about.

Helping kids to understand the dangers in the ocean, and more importantly how to stay calm, and stay safe if ever an incident was to arise.

HIGHLIGHTS

The program is split up into three components:

1. OCEAN THEORY

We'll take the group on a journey discovering the many dangers the ocean can throw up..

They'll learn what dangers to look out for, how and why they occur, the many characteristics of each, and how to avoid them.

2. THE BODY'S UNWANTED REACTION

With fear and panic being the biggest dangers of all in the ocean, we look to understand how our bodies react in these situations so that we can begin the process of retraining those automatic responses.

This process will help kids to stay calm, make more rational decisions, and conserve energy - even in stressful situations.

3. GETTING Practical

We take what we've learned and hit the swimming pool for some real life simulations.

The kids will have their breath hold times recorded, and they'll go through a series of sessions to improve it.

They'll also be exposed to underwater situations that require them to stay calm, composed, and non-reactionary.

Teaching them skills to maintain composure amongst the chaos, and make rational decisions in the face of stressful situations.

THE PROGRAM

Our unique curriculum has been specifically designed for kids, making it fun, interactive, and easy to digest.

We start things off by teaching kids about the dangers ever present in the ocean, how to identify them, and better still - how to avoid them.

With a new understanding and appreciation of how the ocean can quickly become a perilous place, we move onto the important skills of what to do should you ever find yourself in such a situation.

How to stay calm, what to look out for, and action plans in worst case scenarios.

Alongside this, the kids will learn how panicking in these situations is the worst thing to do, and how this response is the real hidden danger in the ocean.

From there we go into the practical side of the program.

The kids will be taken into a controlled water environment and put through a series of simulations to develop their water skills, breath holding capacity, and their ability to stay calm in stressful environments.

Students will learn:

  • How to identify dangers in the ocean.
  • What to do if ever caught in a dangerous place in the surf.
  • How to remain calm, and take correct action to stay safe.
  • How to increase their ability to hold their breath underwater.
  • And much more.
